Casual Discussion

Postby Chewbaca X on Fri Aug 31, 2007 8:16 pm

Here's the place for your Casual Magic discussions. If you want to talk about that time you combo'ed out and knocked out 6 other players at once, or that time you managed a Hunting Pack for 9 because your opponent went spell-crazy, or the time your incredibly silly Kobold deck managed to to win on turn 4, then this is the place to do it. All things involving Casual Magic playing, whether it be multiplayer, one-on-one, or whatever you like, are to be discussed or shared here.

Here's something for you. Last night, we were getting close-ish to the end of a 4-man game, with all of us still being alive at that point. I had Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in play, making everything swamps. Bill had a Filth in his graveyard, which then gave all his guys swampwalk. He runs over to hit Thomas with what I think would have been lethal damage, but Thomas turns and uses his Helldozer... on my Urborg.

That brings the rest of us to the realization that Bill still hadn't actually gotten a swamp of his own into play, so Filth gets turned off (he and his friends say "if you control a [proper basic land]") and the attack is thoroughly foiled.

Heh. That's really great. I didn't think Thomas had it in him.

Here's another flashy set of plays supplied by Thomas, each of which happened in the same game last night.

He was playing his UR "charge counter" deck that tends to win with either Darksteel Reactor, Magistrate's Scepter, or beatdown from the Darksteel creatures pumped up with Power Conduit. I was playing my monogreen beatdown deck. I get off to a pretty good start with a third-turn Hystrodon (face down), which soon gets flipped and has a Blanchwood Armor put on him. In the meantime, he's played a couple of lands, a Coretapper, and a Coalition Relic. At the end of my turn before his 4th, he taps the Relic for a charge and puts another on it with Coretapper. During his upkeep, he uses Coretapper to put yet another charge on the relic. Once he gets into his main phase, he's then suddenly able to play a Darksteel Reactor, Darksteel Brute, and another Coretapper.

One or two turns pass, and Thomas is on the ropes at the hands of my Hystrodon. In the meantime, he's played a couple more lands (only has Islands and Darksteel Citadels so far) and a Darksteel Pendant. At the end of my turn, he engages in further Coretapper/Relic shenanigans, including sacrificing one of the Coretappers, and then surprises me by playing and equipping a Worldslayer to the remaining Coretapper and attacking into my complete lack of defenses. He then uses his Pendant to scry through his deck over the next few turns, finally finding a Mountain so that he could Dismantle the Reactor onto itself and win the game on the turn before I would come back to beat him down.

Happy Holidays

Postby kittwalker on Sat Dec 22, 2007 11:26 pm

Ive been watching a cute event calendar over on garfield.com

http://www.garfield.com/fungames/12Days/12Days.html

and being inspired by the fun there I sat here while watching television tonight and composed this:

Twelve Days of Christmas Magic

A Whippoorwill from the Dark that cannot fly
Two Dovescapes
Three Woodland Changelings (Its a French hen isn't it?)
Four Falling Stars
Five Rings Of Brighthearth
Six Avian Changelings (look at the geese)
Seven Merfolk Swimming
Eight Bird Maids Flying
Nine Ladies Of the Mountain
Ten Sliver Overlords (Lord of the Pit was absent for the holidays)
Eleven Elvish Pipers
Twelve Gifts Ungiven (hopefully they are the foil Christmas WOC ones)

Just my way of wishing you and yours Happy Holidays :D

My best attack ever

Postby buddha_357 on Sat Jan 26, 2008 4:24 am

So a friend of a friend was in town, on break from college and they came over for a casual game. He was using my friends black deck that always wins so I brought out my Affinity/Broodstar deck that I love. I even beat the oh so popular Ravager deck with it. Well I was talking about how great my deck was and how I had only lost with it twice and it was obviously getting to the guy so he focused his attacks on me. My deck was taking forever to get going and he was killing my stuff and doing some damage to me. Well I managed to get my two Vedalken Archmages into play and my deck went to work dropping artifacts left and right then I played out a Broodstar, and equiped Lightning Greaves and two Cranial Plating. Well guess who didn't have a blocker and took 80 damage.

He wasn't happy.

Quickest turn-around ever

Postby garthok84 on Mon Jan 28, 2008 2:59 pm

I was in a 9 person free-for-all game playing a Lorwyn Giants deck with Garruk. One of the guys at the table was playing a "Santa" deck. Helm of Awakening to lower the cost of all spells, and Heartbeat of Spring to double everybody's mana. He also played New Frontiers for 4 or 5, so everybody had tons of land. Also, he had some artifact(I forget the name) that allowed each player to draw cards in their upkeep by paying 2 mana each. I think at the time there were 3 Helms, 2 Heartbeats, and the card draw artifact on the table. Some of the other tables at the deck were Fungus, UW Suspend, BigManaRG, goblins, and some others I can't think of.

I had three giants and Garruk in play when I was starting my turn. I started my turn by playing Arbiter of Knollridge, which put everybody's life total at 40. I then played a Thundercloud Shaman, which was enough to deal lethal damage to each creature. The Fungus guy had some Savage Thallids and several saprolings, so all he ended up losing was the saps. I took damage from a mogg maniac that was on the board. I then played a second Thundercloud(the fungus will die) but he had a Night Soil and was able to make enough saps off all the fresh corpses that he was still able to regenerate all his thallids. I then played a third(!) Thundercloud Shaman. That was enough to finish off all the fungus. So I was the only guy with creatures on the board. I also played a Sunrise Sovereign to make all my guys bigger and tramply.

I ended up swinging at a guy who was playing a leonin deck with the three guys I had at the beginning of the turn. He had a Wing Shards which more than killed off the guys I swung at him with. I still had the Arbiter, 3 Thunderclouds, and the Sovereign, so I was still feeling alright about killing a player or two on my next turn without any trouble. I ended my turn and it was time for the RG big mana player. He played a Bloodfire Colossus, and popped it(killing all my guys, and then threw a Fireball at my head that was just enough to be lethal. From 40 to 0 in that short of a time frame. From top of the world, to out of the game. It sucked to be out, but it was a ton of fun getting to have that one turn.

That story with the giants is sweet! There's not much better in the game than the thrill of a totally amazing play, even if it does lead to your doom.

Does anybody think Incandescent Soulstoke+Nova Chaser+Pandamonium is a bad thing. I love playing that deck in casual games.

Since it's so rare for us host dorks to get together, we tend to stick with normal multiplayer free-for-all. If we ever make it a regular thing (hint hint!) I'm sure we'll go back to doing lots of other stuff. For smaller gatherings of 2 or 3, I like to do some Winston drafting. Anyone else?
