Episode 103 - Standard Rotation: The Faerie Tale is Over

Postby Chewbaca X on Sun Oct 25, 2009 5:19 pm

And in this episode, we bid a fond farewell to the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor mega block. We're gonna take a look back at the stuff that is gone from this Standard. All those cards that we loved, hated, despised, thought were nifty, and were beaten by are getting one last look before heading off to Extended Land forever and ever amen.

And then, not to get stuck looking at the past, we forge ahead into the present! We're taking a look ahead at the cards in Zendikar that tickle our various fancies. Whether we're talking about stuff that just looks cool, or potential Standard powerhouses, or stuff we think is just silly, we're gonna cover it.

Heh, Faerie Tale in terms of Grimm's Faerie Tales. With lots of horrible gore and political overtones.

Thanks for fulfilling my requested episode!

Yeah, that was Malfegor.

That song sounds amazing and if I had the tech and the skill I'd totally put something together for you guys.

At least seven times an episode you fall out laughing.

Active Bloodchief Ascension + Blightning = The Finger, I see Red/Black being a serious deck in the near future.

Hah, I totally said the thing about Sorin turning on the vampires. It was misinterpreted by everyone to be a sexual joke...

Everybody should be thinking that about all the vampires all the time.

I think that Bloodghast over there is giving you the eye, Ben. ;)

I like bacon because it combines my two favorite flavors: Salty and Crunchy.

Aside from the previously mentioned cards, I'm going to miss Brion Stoutarm, Fate Fransfer, and the Mistmeadow Skulk. On the plus side, some of the things I wanted should now cost less.

I am bidding a fond farewell to: Incandescent Soulstoke, Nova Chaser, Somkebraider, Flamekin Harbinger and Thunderblust.
I said goodbye to my standard decks fourth turn, 22 damage combo. For anyone that cares I'll go through the first 4 turns.
- Drop a land and play harbinger. Search for whatever I need (Nova Chaser, Soulstoke or Somkebraider)
- Drop a land and play Smokebraider
- Drop a land and play souldtoke
- Dont need to drop a land but would anyway and tap my Smokebraider to pay for the soulstoke's ability and play Nova chaser championing my harbinger and play souls fire to their face for 11, then beat for 11.
If you didn't care, sorry for wasting your time. :D

I finally got around to listening to this episode, and I'm glad. It was a great episode, and I enjoyed the trip down memory lane back to Lorwyn block. Here's a few thoughts on the Zendikar musings:

In white, the Skyfisher is really good. As is the Hookmaster and Journey to Nowhere. The Worldqueller can be pretty badass if you get it out in the right situation. "Oh, you have a Planeswalker? Sacrifice it. Or you only have one creature on the board. Sac it!"

Blue is okay in Limited, mainly as a milling theme. I played against one guy in a draft who had three Hedron Crabs and he kept playing out the 0/4 guys as blockers. Unfortunately for me I was playing a white/green weenie deck and couldn't get past him in time to survive the milling. Otherwise, I've barely seen blue played in drafts successfully. I splashed it once for fliers (including the Sphinx) but I went up against an aggressive vampire deck in Round 1 and was eliminated quickly.

Black is pretty sick if you can get enough vampires in Limited. 'Nuff said.

Red is decent in Limited. I've never seen the Goblin theme in my drafts, but the aura and Burst Lightning are pretty awesome. Hellfire Mongrel is nifty in the right situation. A 2/2 for 3 isn't great, but late game he can be pretty helpful.

Green is awesome in Limited. In fact, I usually try to have green splashed in any of my draft decks. And I have to agree with Mike that the Trap cards can be pretty good without even using the trap cost. Relic Crush can be okay, but I've never had a situation with it in my hand and had two targets for it. River Boa is GREAT. A two-drop with regen for one is wonderful.
