Episode 119 - SCG 5K Richmond Highlights

Postby Chewbaca X » Wed Mar 10, 2010 6:29 pm

Chewie here, and this is an episode quite unlike most of our others. Mike and Brian went to the Star City Games 5K tournament in Richmond, and this episode is all about their experiences. They both did Saturday (Standard) while Mike tackled Sunday as well (Legacy). Hear all about how they did and what they thought in this very episode!

And while we're on the subject of tournament Magic, let's discuss a little bit of tournament etiquette, shall we? It all boils down to a very simple idea - don't be a jerk! But you know we're going to flesh it out just a little bit more than that, so take a listen to our mental meanderings on the topic.

This is how I could react:AHHHHH THE MANA POOL IS TALKING ABOUT TOURNAMENTS IT'S TURNING INTO A TOURNAMENT CENTRIC PODCAST IT'S THE END OF THE MANA POOL AS WE KNOW IT WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE

But it's not. Because I am a rational person.

This seems like it could be interesting, especially since legacy is this close (holds thumb and forefinger very close together) to being casual magic.

I actually have a tournament etiquette question.

I was at the WWK prerelease and the guy I played in one round got mana screwed both games. He was irritated (obviously.) at the end of the round. I held out my hand, offering the shake and he slapped my hand away and said "No. You don't get the shake." before stalking away.

So here's my question: Is it ever ok to refuse the shake? If so, what's the right way to do it? Judging by the fact that I was offended by his behavior, I'm going to just throw it out there and say the way he did it was wrong.

He was clearly being rude, but that's just something you'll run into from time to time. No one's obligated to shake your hand.

Personally, I believe that it says more about how you take a loss than how you act when you win. If you win, offer a shake. If you lose, at least do so with politeness. Everyone gets mana screwed and even a perfect manabase will fail from time to time, so it's just part of the game.

I prefer to compliment the other person on their deck and I'll shake hands if they offer, though honestly when I lose I tend to be more caught up in coming up with ways I can avoid making the same mistake later. Anger and bitterness isn't just rude; it makes you an inferior player.

I agree. I always shake hands and compliment them on their deck, regardless of whether I won or lost. I can honestly say it's the first thing on my mind. THEN I think about how to avoid making the same mistake again.

More on topic with the episode at hand, you guys need to let me know if you plan on making a Virginia road trip to any limited events. I could care less for competitive constructed, but I might consider tagging along to a limited PTQ or some such. I loves me some sealed/draft and wouldn't make the drive past Burlington unless I had company.

Panahinuva,
If someone does not show good sportsmanship and/or was cheating in your game I would not shake. I would think that would be rare. When my opponent has been screwwed all match I will usually say sorry it had to go down like that instead of running out the Good Game. He probably took the hand as Good Game but his reaction was uncalled for.

I enjoyed this as a one off. It needs more Chewie and humor to be too regular but was just fine for listening at work.
