Episode 81 - Would You Like Some Content with Your Tech

Postby Chewbaca X on Tue May 19, 2009 2:47 pm

This episode was a complete mess, but not for you to listen to. Allow me to explain. First, we are joined by our old friend AJ of "Kill AJ" fame. This leads to our pre-recording conversation becoming a completely random mess that I really wish we could have recorded. Then we have a bit of listener feedback, which we always appreciate. Hint hint!

Then there's some news. The Xbox 360 Live Arcade game, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers, is coming out soon, and the list of Achievements has been released, so I spend a couple minutes going over that. Then Mike gets all giddy about the latest Rules Update that happened a couple weeks ago, and he goes over the various functional changes from this update. Believe it or not, this is actually interesting enough to pay attention to. To follow along yourself, go here:
http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/a ... 35b&page=2

Then there's this bit of news about Planechase, which sounds like a new Vanguard-ish type of thing. Whatever it may be, we're going over the press release with a fine-tooth comb. Actually it's a shoeshine brush, but whatever. To follow along yourself again, go here:
http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/A ... arcana/187

Then I have a bit of Magic-playing news about my trip to Newport News, VA for Mother's Day. My cousin took me to a cyber cafe/card-playing location called Cyberwocky where I did lots of trading and was involved in a pickup Emperor game, something that is completely unheard of around here. It was great, so I talk about it.

Then we wanted to hit some of the high points of Alara Reborn, and this is where things started to fall apart. Brian suddenly realized that he had to go. Then Mike suddenly and involuntarily left us. While he was trying to get back, the rest of us soldiered on. He finally returned to us, sans some of his enthusiasm (not a word you'd usually associate with Mike, but he had a big Rules Update to go over this episode), and the episode ended shortly thereafter.

The real problems came when I tried to put this show together. Four and a half minutes of footage were covered in the horrible clicks that I only sort of managed to remove. I love you guys so much that I recorded a quick apology right before that part. Then the freaking edited-completely-except-for-music file decided it didn't want to save properly and I had to do it all over again. And then I had serious troubles getting the music for this episode to include both left and right stereo channels when I copied it over. But I eventually figured it out. As I write this, I should have been in the bed 45 minutes ago, but I wanted it all ready to upload tomorrow before we record the next show. That's how much I love you guys. Sleep is not as important as getting the episode out sometime before we record the next one, you know?

BTW, iTunes thinks that this is episode 82, not 81. Just thought I'd mention that.

By the way, those clicks you've been getting? Yeah, those are actually the aliens from Signs. You've been intercepting their broadcasts. The MIB appreciates your aid in their efforts to purge the world of alien scum.

Thanks for pointing out that little oops on my part. It has been fixed for anyone downloading it in the future.

And if you've seen Signs, then you know that all you have to do is believe in God and you'll be able to beat the aliens with a baseball bat. Brian told me to say that.

-I'll remember...I mean, I'll tell the MIB.
-And you should give a rundown of what you joke about before the show more often if it's funny enough.

-And did you get my email and article, Chewie?

-And if your house blows up, you can use my safehouse.
-I liked how you did the Onslaught v. Lorwyn tribal and it'd be cool if you did some kind of build and compete thing in the future. I have no idea what you'd do, but you're a creative bunch'a dorks. You can think of something.
-For the achievements, as Tez for final boss, it makes sense, if they're doing the "infinite consortium" for the storyline, like in Jace's book.
-What was that celebratory noise you made after they noted 2HG? It sounded like Tapping.
-There should be more pick up Emperor.
-And G/W tokens was there first (Selesnya), so bugger you Brian. B/W tokens is the rip off. Nya.
-Cyberwocky is a cool name.
-Get anything good? And I agree, not enough casual trading.
-My group is already preparing to get all the Planechase decks.
-Random question: how do you get resounding silence? Doesn't it require noise to resound?
-I agree. Kathari bomber is bad. My opponent would've won at the prerelease, because I had the ground mucked up with zombie wizards and she played a bomber and then later attacked me with it and I laughed at her. She lost that game.
-It depresses me that the Renegades are allowed to be stone rains in limited. And very powerful ones at that.
-LICH LORD OF UNX IS GREAT. I play it in my zombie deck, rather than my mill deck as I expected. Because of the life loss. Several copies of mind funeral went straight into my deck.
-Intimidation bolt went into my r/w aggro deck and won me a game. Jamie's artifacts were clogging up the field...I intimidation bolt one of his guys and storm through for the win. Good card.
-Mike got kidnapped and replaced by aliens. Don't like "Mike" fool you.
-Deny Reality costs too much for a reason.
-And then Brian won with it in Pack Wars...
-Kathari Remnant tricks morons into playing it just for the cascade. People get dumb for new mechanics. Like House for that one girl in Ugly.
-Maelstrom Nexus is amusingly fun in my five color deck and made me realize my lack of one drops.
-Leeches are back! And they don't suck!
-I won with Mael's Aria. In constructed. Although I should've won with my hateflayer 7 TURNS EARLIER.
-I lurv the Sewn Eye drake in my zombie deck. Swinging for seven in the air with haste (I've got lords coming out of my ***).
- Vengeful Rebirth IS great.
-Duh, Zealous Persecution is stupid.
- Runed halo is the preferred choice for Anathemancer defense.
-Main decked anathemancers work in standard, but not in our casual group. Too little money for a 10000 DOLLAR mana base.
-I loved how Shards block catered like mad to multiplayer. Breath of Malfagor, Blood Tyrant, etc. I hope that's a trend they keep up into the upcoming sets. Obviously, planechase will, since it's intended for multiplayer...
-According to my sources, Chris Picula is stomping, screaming mad with rage. I think the new art looks much more attractive. I'd rather play with the hot chick than Khris Pickyla in any case.
-KAMIKAZE!
-I got three Behemoth sledges from my fat pack. Krazy.
-Dominators is meh. Feels like Browbeat.
-And the answer was neither.
-Dew anuder multiplayar! LOL.

Yes, I take notes while listening and comment. I'm awesome.

Pan is absolutely right about Mind Funeral and Lich-Lord of Unx. My friend (who loves zombies) made a Blue/Black control deck that uses Lich Lord, Mind Funeral, Nemesis of Reason (four copies), and Sedraxis Alchemist to do really stupid stuff. Plus, you always think that four lands will come sooner than they do, but that never happens. It's a great card.

HHHhhhhmmmmmmmMMMMMMM

Bad beats on fliping imtimidation bolt with Bloodbraid Elf. If you cast it you will not be able to attack with your hastey guy. Other creatures can not attack this turn.

I felt sorry for Mike last episode since he did not get to talk at all. Strangely I do not feel sorry when Dirk doesn't talk. This might be because it feels like Dirk does not talk by choice.

Anyway mike made up for it this episode (except for the part where his connection crapped out on him).

If you are playing B/R the ananthemancer should be main given most people are still not respecting it building thier manabases.

tainted sigil is the tits for sure. its going in my panoptic mirror/shahrazad multiplayer deck... right before the full spoiler i started searching for something like this that gained me life equal to that lost by my opponents cuz shahrazad causes 50% life loss for subgame losers) and found nothing.. and this is just so much better than nothing. wooo never ending subgames! ....and no friends :(

Sadly, Drake, you will have no friends if you do that. But don't worry, you don't need friends as long as you've got the Mana Pool! :D

My friend Jon just built an EDH deck with with Progenitus as the general and Maelstrom Nexus as a powerful component of the deck. It has both versions of Nicol Bolas, Wargate to combo with Wort, the Raidmother(He gated for 8 and grabbed both Bolas when he conspired). He let me play it against his Mayael deck. I played Nexus with one land open. Jon tapped out on his turn for Akroma and swung at me. I shot her with Swords to Plowshares and cascaded into the only spell in the deck that it could hit...Ancestral Vision. 8)
I expect the Spanish Inquisition, but NO MAN CAN EAT 50 EGGS!!
