Episode 96 - Reflection on Ravnica

Postby Chewbaca X » Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:06 am

Holy crap it's the Mana Pool! Wizards has revealed the last two Planechase decks, so we check out each and every plane on this fabulous tour of the multiverse. Keep an ear out for lots of informational sound-related material - like what being on fire sounds like, and discussions on spheres on the vertical surface that holds up the ceiling. Doosh!

Because we talked about bad mechanics on the last episode, we mentioned Ravnica quite a few times. So Dirk thought we should do a block review of Ravnica as a whole. So we did! We take each of the 10 guilds of Ravnica and go over what their deal is. This includes but is not limited to: their mechanic, their philosophy, their place in the Ravnican society, and a few nifty cards from each one. We really loved Ravnica block.

And a big thank you goes out to all the people who entered the Duel Decks Contest! We're going to get started on that at some point and determine winners...at some point.

Daaaaaaaaaaah. You guys...you put up an episode I desperately want to listen to while I'm on vacation. I loved the guilds. My two favorites were Dimir and Izzt, in terms of philosophy. You don't get more fun than secret agents and mad scientists.

daunting Incineration
Instant 2R

daunting Incineration deals 3 damage to target creature or player. A creature dealt damage this way can't be regenerated this turn.

replicate R

would that be a good replicate card?

well, in standard i don't think it would be broken, because well, it can't be played until turn 3, then the replicated doesn't matter. by turn 4 you can replicate, then its like a double incinerate. sure after that it can be a little more fun, but like i said competitive would love that card ^_^

how about this

dauntless Incineration
Instant 1R

dauntless Incineration deals 2 damage to target creature or player. A creature dealt damage this way can't be regenerated this turn.
if replicate was paid, draw a card.
replicate 1UR

-...Maybe you can skip episode 100 until after zendikar previews are over? Go "99, 101, 100"? It's unorthodox, but hey. It's episode 100.
-I thought that was "splash?"
-So is a Doosh-bag a bag filled with rocks that you throw into the water.
-Nonsense is a witty intro.
-And you have 100 things on the RSS feed.
-Golbez, you are not the final boss. HAH HAH, YOU GOT YOUR ASS BEATEN BY ZEROMUS! AHAHAH! But seriously, Golbez was awesome. I've actually played Final Fantasy 4, although it was for the GBA. I AM OLD SCHOOL.
- Awwww, dissidia is only for the PSP? Damn. I wanted to play that. Is Golbez in it?
- I've already gotten the Zombie Empires. I had someone buy it for me, since I wasn't there. I'm disappointed that Nefashu is in there. But I love all the non-creatures that are in there. WHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE NOXIOUS GHOUL! I'VE GOT ONE NOW! AND NOW I HAVE 4 DARK RITUALS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-Woo polymorhping in the resurrection deck.
-Here, have my expended artifact. I love Cliffside market.
-Why does Ulgrotha still exist? It blew up.
-Don't you always want to run like hell from Phyrexia?
-I actually bought it for the Cabal Coffers. Because I need one.
-Is it just me, or does Arkhos sound like Arkham? You know, like the asylum.
-Or set up some Soulless One?
-Bolas is so awesome, he just makes his own place to hang out.
-BOLAS SCUBA DIVING.
-If you build a planar deck, you should probably throw in a pools of becoming. Because it works well in ANY planar deck.
-The Shaa was epic win. I love 'im.
-OH GOD THE BURNING.
-Babies are scrumptious.
-I liked how they did the snapshot thing.
-They built the block around the story, instead of vica versa.
-I HATE TWIKIES.
-Boros kicks you in the face and then crushes you like an insect.
-Zealotry was present in Boros.
-Haaaaaaaaaaa, irradiate.
-No, just small.
-Yeah, Lightning Helix is really good.
-Boros had some pretty wicked fast guys.
-WOOOO DIMIR!
-Dimir's purpose was to destroy the other guilds.
-Dimir agents will find all people reading this post and listening to this podcast and remove the information about Dimir.
-Of course, this is all hypothetical.
-Bet you wish that Golgari didn't exist.
-No, necromancy is pretty illegal.
-We're working on a new leader for them in the new set.
-Svogthos isn't dead yet!
-Jered. Savra's brother.
-Don't forget life from the loam.
-No, Selesnyans were definately cultists.
-Recruting by any means necessary. They mind control people.
-Hippy borg.
-Chorus of the Conclave was really weird for Selesnya. I would play it in my elf deck, but it's weird.
-Woo, he's a liege that makes a 4/4 wolf.
-Voja was intended to be the next leader of Selesnya.
-Autochthon wurm has the biggest butt in Magic.
-Gruul was not hobos. They just crush people. They're more like the gangs.
-Borborygmous wasn't very bright. He just was good at motivating other people to destroy stuff.
-Man, bloodthirst looked like fun.
-Yeah, Gruul didn't have many other activated abilities, did they?
-Izzt is made up entirely of mad scientists.
-Niv Mizzit was an arrogant prick.
-Flavor text is math? Qua?
-Replicate could've been awesome.
-Djinn Illuminatus + Pact of the Titan + Pandemonium = Win.
-Orzhov Pontiff was ridiculous.
-Azorious says "Do nothing. Status quo is fine. GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR." And then exiles you.
-NOW YOU ARE ASLEEP. BECAUSE I TALKED YOU TO SLEEP.
-There's the Droning Bureaucrat. haaaaaaaaa.
-Augustin was evil? Holy crap. Blue white isn't usually evil.
-So you can play overrule with Augustin out for U/W and counter a spell for two? Awesome.
- Woooooooooo Rakdos! SMASH!
-Rakdos was mercenary.
-To be in Rakdos, you have to literally be insane.
-Rakdos was the S&M Guild. That's a little weird.
-Joker would definately be in Rakdos.
-Simic guys were weird...biological mad scientists. Love 'em though.
-Experiment Kraaj was a freaking badass. Pity he screwed the population.
-Momir Vig was a psycho. But Momir basic is so fun.
-I like how Simic Sky Swallower is the better version of Sky Swallower.
-Cytoshape messes people up.
-Excruciator, Scion of the Wild,Stalking Vengeance were also avatars.
-Ravnica was awesome.
-IF YOU WANNA DO SOMETHING AWESOME, COME HELP US WITH THE RETURN TO RAVNICA SET!

Still catching up on the last couple of episodes...

-I really like the Planechase decks, except the Metallic Dreams one. The others are all so in-your-face aggressive that I really don't see how the artifact deck can compete.
-Haha, the Shiv comments about cute creatures with Firebreathing cracked me up at work. I'm imagining creatures such as Spore Frog, Jackal Pup, and one-drop goblins.

It's really funny how screwed the metallic dreams deck gets by 1 akroma's vengeance.
