My name is Kevin and I'm an second year undergrad at the University of California in Santa Barbara. I consider myself a new player even though I bought my first cards years ago. I remember buying an 8th Edition starter set, some Onslaught block boosters, and some Mirrodin. These sets comprise most of my small collection. I didn't play for long, but now I have been wanting to get back into the game. I've become familiar with the expansions that have come out in the past few years and still have that old zombie deck I first started with. I remember the first few boosters I bought. I opened up an Akroma, but then I traded it away later that day for what looked like a decent zombie tribe deck. I couldn't help but think I was getting ripped off, but I didn't care either way. I my zombie haul included some Undead Warchiefs, Lord of the Undead, a Gempalm, some old looking Terrors, etc. I've added a few new zombies since then, including some Death Barons and Zombie Masters in the past couple of months. However, I suspect tribal decks may be outdated. I haven't bought any of the Alara expansions yet, but plan to eventually. Any suggestions for getting back into the game? Should I invest in Shards block or wait until m2010 and Zendikar? The podcast is great and I've been trying to catch up since the first episode. Just finished the first of the Conflux previews..

SO i will introduce myself, my name is Danny and yes i am a magicaholic. (everyone replies "HI DANNY.") So i just joined this forum today, but i have been a magic player since revised i do believe. ive played very casual games until two years ago when i started playing FNM. then after a year of gettting used to the tourney scene i got deployed and then have had to mash mad info of the latest sets into my brain(morningtide on up). i have done okay for my self with the knowledge that my friends have shared since ive gotten back, and listening to you guys have gotten the hamster running a little faster now.
so thats about it i think.....im moving to colorado so if any of you are there hit me up on facebook.

Hey, Fineberg here.

I got into Magic at the age of 11 when 3rd edition and the Dark were out with Fallen Empires and Ice Age to follow. I left the game temporarily around Homelands/Alliances (because I hated those crap cards) and came back for a short time to play Tempest, one of my all time favorite sets. Took another break, came back for Onslaught and then stayed until Kamigawa block (can you really blame me?). Didn't return AGAIN until Shards of Alara, but maybe this time I will stick around for more than two blocks.

My main deck is a Bant deck that runs

Creatures

4 x Noble Hierarch
1 x Meddling Mage
4 x Qasali Pridemage
4 x Rafiq of the Many
4 x Rhox War Monk
1 x Sovereigns of Alara
2 x Wall of Denial

Spells/Enchantments

2 x Finest Hour
2 x Steel of the Godhead
2 x Elspeth, Kinght-Errant
4 x Path to Exile
1 x Wrath of God
1 x Remove Soul
3 x Bant Charm
3 x Hindering Light

Lands

4 x Plain
3 x Island
5 x Forest
3 x Adarkar Wastes
4 x Brushland
1 x Mystic Gate
2 x Yavimaya Coast

Hi.. I'm Andrew and I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I am going be be a Senior at South Dakota State University majoring in Software Engineering. I started playing magic back in 7th edition and Odyssey.. i then stopped after the kimagawa block. Not because of the block... but because i just didn't have enough people to play with. I started again when i got to college and found people to play with. The Shards block is the first block that i have taken fairly seriously. I even went to the 5K in minnepolis... but we won't go into detail about that... it was just for fun.

The mana pool has been a great way for me to distract myself while doing redundant work on the computer. I do look odd snickering to myself in the middle of a quiet office.. but it is totally worth it. Keep up the long and entertaining podcasts boys. I enjoy them.

Well.. i'm done with my little ramble. See you all around... (figuratively of course)

Re posted from the manapool introduction thread. I play magic and listen to the mana pool, so hopefully its not a problem that i introduce myself in both sections of the forums  .

Hey, I'm Boone. I'm 16 and going into my junior year at Edina Highschool in Minnesota. I was introduced to magic by some friends in 3rd grade, around the time torment came out. That summer, we decided to go to our local card shop (Dreamers games in St. Louis Park, MN) and start playing in some tournaments. After the initial surprise of finding out we had been playing under a pretty horrible interpretation of the rules, we started to have a lot of fun playing in the "kiddie" (under 18, type 1.5) tournament held there every Saturday. I played throughout half of Odyssey block, and all of Onslaught and Mirrodin. During that time I played a mix of FNM, 1.5, and an occasional draft or launch party. My friends and I slowly drifted away from magic the summer after Mirrodin block (Ravager affinity has a way of doing that to someone) and completely stopped before kamigawa came out.

About a month ago, I found a bucket of old cards in a friends closet at a party. We thought it would be fun to organize a draft out of cards we found, and ended up having a bunch of fun (and alienating the few people there who had never played magic). Since then, we basically all dug out our old cards and started playing magic again with each other. I've been thinking of getting back into the local tournament scene, but I figured I should probably find out what happened with magic since Mirrodin. I read the descriptions of the sets I missed on the official mtg website, but those are little more than wizards marketing pitches for each set, so I sought out a more in depth and more entertaining method of catching up.

I searched mtg on itunes, and tested out the podcasts that came up. Obviously the mana pool was far and away the most entertaining, and seemed to be a lot more friendly to someone who hasn't been an avid magic player for about 5 years. I'm up to episode 42 of the podcast so far, and I've been enjoying them a lot. The preview episodes are very helpful to me as anything that was news at the time the episodes were recorded is new to me.

Anyway, you always mention on the show that people should weigh in on the whether or not we like the long episodes, well I for one am a big fan, so keep it up. Although the podcast does start after several blocks I missed, I've still learned a lot about everything from Lorwyn to Eventide, and been supremely entertained in the process. The Shards of Alara previews(which I heard from someone was an all gold block? how ridiculous) are coming up in a few episodes, and I'm looking forward to the usual hilarious prerelease stories, interesting takes on/explanations of new themes and mechanics, and all the other awesome stuff the mana pool has consisted of thus far.

Hi, so, I'm from new york, around the capital region, and I'm a fairly casual player, although I have attended prereleases. I play a lot of pauper and edh as well as good-old-fashioned multiplayer and duels. My only serious deck is Ichorid. I also Golf and do a lot of farm work. I'm in school for funeral services and am planning on running for post of Schoharie County Coroner as soon as the position opens up. thats a basic outline of me in a nutshell. So, Yeah, see you around!
P.S. Echoing Boonesbane, I introduced myself twice, hope its ok.
P.P.S. Long episodes FTMFW

Postby Marcato on Wed Sep 02, 2009 10:09 am

Greetings from sunny Gardena, CA! I'm Marcato (Not actual name, though I think we can agree its pretty cool ^^) and I've been playing MTG since about when Onslaught came out, and have been a fan of it since. Though I'm mainly a casual player, I have attended a few PTQ's, but have not made it past the second round for a while (kinda lame, but whatev, its not about comp. its about fun ^^)

I started listening to the Mana Pool about a couple months ago, and have made it a routine to listen whenever I have the time. Its all about the nice 2 hour episodes that I can just walk around my house listening to instead of watching the garbage that I get on my TV (No more "reality shows"!)

Sorry I didn't post sooner, I had some Magic playing to do these past couple of days ^^

Hello, Baneslayer spider here ( I know, goofy name but would have been a great chase rare.) I am 32 years old. I started playing magic just before Fallen Empires.( when Shivan dragon ruled the world) Stopped after Ice age. got back involved from Tempest-Onslaught. then out and back again during Futuer sight. I am currently trying to make the transition from casual to competitive. I still love casual multiplayer, I just have to see If I am good enough to do well in Tournaments.

Other than magic, my time is dominated by family ( wife 2 kids, 9 and 12) and work. I am a Graphic Artist with a sign company here in Tennessee. I play guitar some, draw some, read some. Thats about it. Nice to meet everyone. Ill be around

Samuel Sedgman

Postby ssedg1 on Fri Sep 25, 2009 1:16 am

Hello everyone.
My name is Samuel Sedgman and I live in Queensland, Australia. I am currently 15 and I have been 'playing' magic since odyssey block, but I actually learnt the rules around Scourge. My uncle, who has played since the start, got my twin and I into it and we have been hooked ever since. We mostly play each other and go in FNMs a couple times a month. Still, mostly casual. We have also managed to convert about four or five of our friends.
Magic isn't all we do though. We own an X Box and play that more than we should. We row for our school and play club AFL (Thats Australian Football League for all you Americans going 'Whats AFL?'.) Google it :-P
But back to magic...
I first started playing really seriously around Morningtide. I have played mono-red rush burn pretty much in every tourny I've ever played.
Thats pretty much all I can think of right now... I'm gonna go play some magic.
