Magic podcast suggestions

Postby Chewbaca X on Tue Sep 18, 2007 7:11 pm

Hello Cardshark Forum members! Chewie, your content editor and forum administrator here. We at Cardshark (well, really just me) are considering doing a Magic podcast of some sort. I need to know how many of you would be interested in listening to such a thing. And no, you don't need an iPod or iTunes to partake. I can't seem to make the people I work with (in my day job) understand how a podcast works. The best explanation is this, for those of you that are unsure: It's like a radio show that you can download and listen to at your leisure.

Now, for those of you interested in listening to a Magic podcast, I need to know what sort of content you'd want. Let me know what sort of things related to Magic I should cover. Tournament-related stuff, Magic news, new sets, card strategy, etc etc. Let me know which of these things interests you most.

But those are the easy ones. I need to know what else you want. Anything else related to the game of Magic is fair game. Thanks to everyone in advance! As somebody said once on the radio - Hit me with your best shot.

I think a CardShark podcast could benefit from having a "hot cards" price watch update. You know, for big movers, deck staples, and hidden bargains. Or hey, even reminders about specials that sellers are running.

Besides that, I've wanted from time to time a good explanation about how certain hot tournament decks actually work. Some of the recent ones just look to me like thrown-together piles that aren't much special, and it would probably do me some good as a player to know what's going on in that respect.

I think it's the correct thing to do if you want to take that step forward. I check a lot of stuff from Magicthegathering.com and Starcitygames.com, and podcasts are definitely a popular thing. Videos practically made Evan Erwin what he is.

So the answer is yes, do it! I think you'll see the positive results of it almost immediately.

I agree with Rhad's comments about having a "hot card" list and a brief explanation for how the popular decks work (not every casual player can follow Solar Flare or Owling Mine). I would also consider making announcements about what events are upcoming in the Magic tournament world, product releases, and Cardshark promotions. Lastly, referencing Cardshark articles for game theories and decks will both give you more material and hopefully increase reading of the articles.

Great idea, Mr. Editor

I could possibly be interested but unfortunately for me I've been so busy working that I would have no clue how to listen to a podcast. If anyone could fill me in on that that would be very helpful.

Ah, yes, well, that's the easy part. The only way I know for sure that will work would be to find the podcast on the Cardshark page and download it (once a podcast gets recorded and uploaded). It will be an mp3, so you can listen to it with any audio program, whether it's iTunes, Windows Media Player, WinAmp, Musicmatch, etc etc.

Hopefully there will be a way to subscribe to the podcast, whether you do that through iTunes or the Cardshark RSS feed or whatever else. Once those things begin to materialize, I'll post a how-to that will explain it all. But the easiest way is to simply download it and listen to it, just like a sound clip or a music mp3. Sound good?

Hey everybody! I've decided to go ahead with the podcast. I need a name though. Anyone have any suggestions for a name for a Magic podcast?

What will the subject be of the podcast? Standard? Single Cards? Decks? Magic tournaments? Magic News?

Anything and everything related to Magic, my friend. Brought to you with my own special flair, of course. Hopefully those guys Rhadamanthus and Dragon of Law will join in from time to time so it's not just me talking to my computer, you know?

But yeah, scroll up to see the stuff that's already been mentioned. Actually, I'll just quote it.

-Tournament-related stuff, Magic news, new sets, card strategy, etc etc.
-I think a CardShark podcast could benefit from having a "hot cards" price watch update. You know, for big movers, deck staples, and hidden bargains. Or hey, even reminders about specials that sellers are running.
-Besides that, I've wanted from time to time a good explanation about how certain hot tournament decks actually work. Some of the recent ones just look to me like thrown-together piles that aren't much special, and it would probably do me some good as a player to know what's going on in that respect.
-I would also consider making announcements about what events are upcoming in the Magic tournament world, product releases, and Cardshark promotions. Lastly, referencing Cardshark articles for game theories and decks will both give you more material and hopefully increase reading of the articles.

So that's what's been mentioned thus far. If you have any other suggestions, then by all means hit me with them. And possible titles too of course. Thanks much!

I suggest you also talk about magic online. Unfortunately my creative brain can't come up with anything catchy for a title, that is unless you like the idea of calling the podcast: Magic 101, or Chewy is not from Charlston (Charlston Chews candy), or Furry thoughts from a furry friend.

What about Magic Online do you want to know? I can't actually get to MTGO, because I have a dual-core processor in my PC and apparently the MTGO installer can't handle that. I keep getting to 90% or so and it freezes. The Wizards tech support gave me a workaround that didn't work around, so they told me basically to wait for 3.0. But if there's something that doesn't involve actually being on MTGO, I can totally jump on that. You know, news and the like. So let me know what you were wanting and I'll see if I can't figure out a way to include it. I have friends with MTGO and no lives, so I might be able to bribe them somehow. :D

The podcast is a go! The bosses agreed to sponsor the show! There will be a new forum posted for it in the root directory, so you'll have to click up there where it says "Cardshark Forum Index" to find it once it's up. I'll post the RSS feed in here once I get it set. With any luck, I'll have the first show out next week!
