Garruk Versus Liliana

Postby lamperouge98 on Mon Oct 19, 2009 2:30 pm

The decklists for these two are up at the MTG site.

Here's a link:

Notable things: 2 Rancors in the Garruk deck. That's pretty ridiculous. Also, a Plated Slagwurm. That's really sweet. I don't see a ton of notable stuff in Liliana's deck, but that just may be because I don't know what most of them do. Thoughts?

(Personally, I'm totally psyched about the Rancors. I don't own any, and they're AMAZING).

That art we've been discussing? The reverse overrun? It's mutiliate.

And also, consider me psyched. I need to get this somehow.

Given the duel decks seem to slant a bit, I imagine Garruk will win out on the simple grounds that he can protect himself and Liliana doesn't gain major use of her first or third ability in the face of Garruk's token legions. He doesn't need cards to make creatures and she can't raise dead tokens, so combine this with the fact that she drops a turn later and Garruk provides massive tempo advantage and it's a pretty sore contest. It's really too bad they seem intent on not reprinting Damnation, as it'd be a good in-black answer to the green meanie.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking Damnation would have been a soild safe bet for this deck to have in. (quriously so, since they put Harmonize in it. I'm always a litttle interested when the reprint the colour shifted stuff from 'sprial block. In the colour it was hifted too. PErsonally I really think the Garruk deck doesnt need the Harmonize. Since I dont see the discard from Lilianna being too much of a problem for it(since it has Rootwalla's)

Granted Multilate is well. Multilate. It just seems like they onesided this one Again. Jace V Chandra once again seems to be the sorta only balanced one. I was sorta disapointed in what the black deck got. Granted its good and if it gets in Skeletal Vampire/Bat thing rolling it can block Garruk all day long. But the problem is the overrun can deal with that unless you have a LOT of blockers.

My friend got this and he said it turns out it's actually pretty balanced. I'm looking forward to getting this somehow and just testing the bejesus out of it.

Haha... I beat you to it lamperouge.
I played about 8 games with it so far and Liliana has been dominating for the most part. I've even been playing with my friends with some Jace vs Chandra vs Garruk vs Liliana and I've noticed that the last duel decks are a lot slower then the first. But that might just be me. Anyway, it is still awesome.
Plated slagworm is sweeterific.
And Mutilate it great.
- The art is great
- The Flavour test is great
- And the card is GREAT

Wow. That comes as a surprise that Liliana is dominating. Not a bad surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. Thanks for the report, ssedg.

I was also suprised to hear liliana was winning.
Me and my buddy played yesterday and me playing Garruk actually won most games. 4-1 I believe. All on the back of better creatures and pretty good anti-removal tricks. Having refill options with Harmonize and of course the almost never ending Rancor also really helps against the removal.

After some adjustments he actually came out ahead the second go with 3-2. Here the ajustments:

We added to garruk:
2 Mold shamblers (fungus BEAST!) instead of stomphowlers to always be able to kill off something. We agreed that stomphowler was Stupid in the garruk deck.
2 Primal Bellow instead of Wild Growth, because forests :)
Primal command, because awesome.
2 Quest for the gemblades. Still pending.. It's such a crappy topdeck and with the removal.. dunno.

To Liliana:
2 malakir gatekeeper instead of the fleshbag marauder.
2 Vampire hexmages (i got mold shamblers to kill off liliana, he gets those. They're both pretty good, garruk runs suprisingly much counters).
2 quest for the gravelord instead of the vampire bats.
Profane command to mirror the primal command. It is pretty darn strong though, still pending.
Another hideous end.

I really really like this VS. deck. A lot more than Devine VS demonic anyway, those preeeetty much sucked (especially because I was playing Demonic..)
If anyone is interested I could keep up with the deck evolution here?
