Apparently, I get distracted too easily. I have been meaning to write up a tournament report from the PTQ in Roanoke that happened a week and a half ago. There were 11 people from the store in Durham where I go for FNM that attended the event. I went 6-3 with 5CC. My three losses were all against decks with maindeck Anathemancer. Somebody I know that ended up top 8ing with 5CC had 2 Runed Halo in the main with an extra in the side as a way to fight that. One of the other guys, and one of my judgely compatriots, ended up winning the event with Merfolk. He lost in the second round, and did not lose another match. My 5cc friend should have moved beyond the quarterfinals, but while resolving his Cruel Ultimatum, he accidentally put the Broodmate dragon that he was supposed to be getting back with it into the graveyard along with the Ultimatum. He and his opponent proceeded to play draw go until his opponent was able to play an Anathemancer, have it countered, and unearth it in the same turn. Adrian would have easily killed him with the dragons by that point. One of our other storemates was playing a homebrewed cascade control deck that he and two others had put together after testing for two weeks straight. He finished in 17th as the last 7-2. Unfortunately, prizes only went as far as 16th. One win that I was rather proud of was in the second round. I was facing Shaheen Soorani. He is a long-time professional who finished in second at a PTQ in Boston two weeks beforehand. He was playing a Naya Ramp deck that I was able to get enough control of in games 1 and 3 between my counters and removal that I was able set off the ultimate ability on my Ajani Vengeant in both of those games. In the second game. I mulliganed to four, seeing either no lands or only a Reflecting Pool in all of those hands. I kept four spells and hoped for the best. He was able to get a fourth turn Ajani Vengeant of his own that tied down some of the lands that I did draw. Eventually he played a Realm Razer, and I scooped them up. The one big mistake that I remember from this game was when he went for a Thought Hemorrhage in the second game. He already had the Ajani Vengeant active, so I knew that I was pretty screwed already. I should have gone ahead and scooped in response to the hemorrhage rather than let him take a look at my deck and see how I had sideboarded against him. For the third game, I brought back in one of my Volcanic Fallouts as a little extra insurance against Realm Razer. Overall, I had a great time and got to meet several more experienced judges. I also got to spend a few minutes speaking with Evan Erwin towards the end of the day. One of the cool things that was done was that at the start of the second round, they announced that they were putting a bounty on the heads of any DCI judges that were playing in the event. I was glad that I only gave up three packs on the day, though I was disappointed that the bounty did not count for my first round win against my friend Mills, who is also a judge. Oh well. Good times with good friends, and a good record.
I expect the Spanish Inquisition, but NO MAN CAN EAT 50 EGGS!!
